This is a sterling silver 2 strand freshwater cultured pearl and mother of pearl necklace. The necklace is about 17 1/4"" long. The necklace has a toggle closure.
Jewelry styles come and go, but pearl jewelry is timeless. Freshwater cultured pears are created by mussels and are mostly farmed in China. The mussels are mostly nucleated, but a newer method of a bead being introduced is being used in order for bigger sized pearls to be produced. The pearls are available in several colors from white, cream, pink, orange and pastal colors. which can be due to natural cultivation, or they can be treated for many different colors. Pearls come in various shapes such as round, oval, coin, button, baroque, stick, potato, square and rice. Pearls are organic and are composed of calcium carbonate and require proper care.
CARE
Store pearls in a velvet or soft material drawstring bag. Close clasps to prevent scratching the pearls. Store away from other jewelry to prevent scratching. Don't store in a plastic bag. Don't hang pearls it could cause stretching. Store flat. Don't store in sunlight or near heat. Put pearls on after apply cosmetics, hairspray and perfume. Don't wear when doing housework, playing sport, bathing or swimming. Avoid contact with vinegar, fruit juice and detergents.. Don't use harsh chemicals and acid. Don't use an ultrasonic cleaner or jewelry cleaner. Wipe with a soft cloth after wearing to remove perspiration. If using water use only distilled water and dab with a soft cloth and wipe dry. Tap water contains chlorine which is not good for pearls. Don't clean with a brush. Don't stretch pearls when cleaning.
MOTHER OF PEARL
Mother of pearl is produced by molluscs, mussels, oysters and abalone by producing a secretion called nacre which lines its inner shell. It is iridescent and strong. It is used in ornaments and jewelry. CARE Avoid harsh chemicals , perfumes and certain soaps which can damage the mother of pearl. Remove when doing housework and cooking. Clean with a soft or jewelry cloth. Store separately from other jewelry in a soft cotton bag out of direct sunlight.
